Because they are photosynthetic and aquatic, cyanobacteria are often called "blue-green algae". This name is convenient for talking about organisms in the water that make their own food, but does not reflect any relationship between thecyanobacteria and other organisms called algae.

Answer:

Cyanobacteria or the blue green algae are the photosynthetic bacteria that can make their own food.

Explanation:

Cyanobacteria were classified earlier in an algal group as they are photosynthetic in nature. These bacteria possess photosynthetic pigments phycobilins, chlorophyll and carotenoids. These pigments help in photosynthesis and that's why they were earlier grouped in the algae category. But they are now placed in  bacteria because they are prokaryotic in nature and do not possess any double membrane bound organelles like the other algal forms have. They have circular DNA and 70s type ribosomes which also differentiate them from other algal forms.
