Why d.c. voltmeter and d.c. ammeter cannot read a.c.??

Since average value of current and voltage over a complete cycle is zero ,so DC voltmeter and DC ammeter cannot measure the alternating current. AC ammeter and AC voltmeter measures the rms value of the current and voltmeter respectively.
