The reason why transition metal in particular are colorful is because they have unfilled or either half filled d orbitals. There is Crystal field theory which explains the splitting of the d orbital, which splits the d orbital to a higher and lower orbital.

a)because in d9 orbital their is 9 electron also only 2 electron placed in each orbital

b) in d sub shell thier is 5 orbital

so 8 electron paired but one electron remain unpaired

which result in exictation from one orbit to another which result in colour emissions
