Dams are referred to as multipurpose projects because of the following reasons:
1) dams are helpful for irrigation, to the places of less water availability.
2) they prevent flood by storing the excess river water.
3) they are useful in generating electricity in hydro power plants.
Since dams have various uses they are referred to as multi purpose projects.
