Dams stop water and can also be used to produce hydroelectricity. They also serve purpose as bridges at some areas. Due to its multi-purpose nature it is called multi- purpose project

As dams can be utilized to do a number of purposes at the same time like generating hydroelectricity, providing water for irrigation, preventing floods, for recreational activities etc. So, dams are often referred to as Multi- purpose projects.
