deciduous plants lose their leaves to conserve water or to better survive winter weather conditions, they must regrow new foliage during the next suitable growing season; this uses resources which evergreens do not need to expend.

- Tropical deciduous forests are found in large parts of India, Northern part of Australia and America. Such areas experience seasonal changes and hence the tropical deciduous trees shed their leaves in the dry season to save water.

Tropical deciduous trees usually possess large, broad leaves. When water is plentiful, the trees take up water. The large leaves take up sunlight to photosynthesise food; the excess water is removed through the leaves i.e. it is transpired.
During dry seasons when water is scarce, it becomes a necessity to conserve water that's available. That's the reason leaves are shed off to limit transpiration.
