Once, a few centuries ago, dense forest covered a majority of our country. But as we began development, these forests made way for cultivation and infrastructure. This indiscriminate cutting down of trees is what we call deforestation. Let us take a look at the causes of deforestation in India since the colonial times.

Causes of Deforestation

Forests form an important part of our ecosystem and are beneficial to us in various ways. Major deforestation in India occurred during the British rule, between the years 1880 and 1920. Deforestation is not something that has come up recently but the problem had begun centuries ago. However, it was under the colonial rule that the whole problem of deforestation became more systematic and extensive.

Deforestation took place in a massive scale in colonial rule because, In colonial period cultivation expanded for variety of reasons.

1. The British directly encouraged the production of commercial crops LIKE,..

Jute ,sugar,wheat,cotton.

2. In the 19th century ,the colonial state thought that the forest was unproductive . they were considered to be wilderness that had to be bought under cultivation so that the land could yield agriculture products and revenue, and enhance the income of the state .

3. Oak forest in England were disappearing. this created a problem of timber supply for the royal Navy. so the British targeted India and started clearing the oak forest .

4.The railway expanded rapidly form 1860s.

As the railway tracks spread through India, a larger and larger number of trees were felled .

5.Large areas of natural forests were also cleared to make way for tea, coffee, and rubber plantation to meet Europe 's growing need for these commodities.

These were the reasons why deforestation occured on a large scale in colonial period.
