Democracy is important because it is the only major political system that gives full governance to the collective majority of the people. Whatever the majority wants to do is what happens. In other forms of government, the people don't directly run the country. In the United States of America, for example, the government is elected by the people, but it isn’t made up of all the people in the country. Instead, representatives are elected to represent the people’s interests.

Other forms of governance will give power to one person or a group of powerful individuals. These include monarchies, oligarchies, dictatorships, and many others. Democracy is different from all of these because everyone has a small amount of power, instead of one group having all the power. However, this leads to the main danger with democratic forms of government: tyranny by the majority. This is when the concerns of minorities in the population are ignored because the majority has different ideas. In a democracy, whatever the majority says, goes, and everyone who isn’t in the majority doesn’t get what they want.

Democracy is important because it gives the full power of governance to the people, at least in theory
