When a gas or liquid is heated,the molecules move faster ,bump into each other ,and spread apart.

The opposite occurs when a liquid or gas is cooled. The molecules move more slowly, take up less space and get slightly closer together ,occupying a smaller volume that results in an increase in density. This is the reason behind the increase in density of gas while cooling.
