The rise in the population densities of Bihar and West Bengal, however, is not a cause for much concern, say experts. This is because both states are still mainly rural. It is the burgeoning of urban populations that leads to unsustainable situations such as an insupportable demand for drinking water.

The states of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Kolkata have relatively high population density due to the following reasons:

● the location of the areas, as these are located near the river Ganga which is the lifeline of northern India. Due to the presence of river Ganga, the plains are very fertile and rich in minerals which are very much required for agricultural activities.

● the areas of these states have mostly illiterate and rural population which doesn't really care about the family planning and follows the patriarchal system. A boy child is the main requirement no matter how many children are born in the time to get a baby boy.
