detergent are used instead of soap because
1)it can even be used in hard water but soap get wasted if the water is hard
2)detergent can be used even in acidic medium but soap can't be
3)the cleansing power of detergent is much higher than that of soap
4)detergent are more soluble in water then soap

detergent are more soluble in water than soap and are unaffected by hardness of water as their calcium salts are soluble in water .
