Answer:

Diamond is a solid crystalline matrix of Carbon with a few atoms of other elements scatered around wherever they can fit into the matrix. They fewer the atoms of other elements, the purer and more perfect the Carbon matrix, and the more transparent the diamond is. This Carbon matrix is able to absorb forces by tranmitting them across the matrix, which holds it's shape and makes it difficult to dislodge the Carbon atoms from their place in the rigid matrix. This makes the diamond hard in light.
