When Sri Lanka became independent in 1948 , the sinhala leaders thought to adapt some ' majoritarian ' measures to establish their supremacy. They declared sinhala as national language, preferences were now made for sinhalans in working jobs and buddhism was to be secured.
This made Tamils raise demands for making Tamil official language, equal preferences and a separate state for them. Sinhala government denied these demands giving rise to the civil war.
