Answer:

These states left because they had concerns about what would happen to slavery now that the fighting had begun. They waited until the Civil War began before leaving the Union. These states were convinced after the battle at Fort Sumter that their needs would no longer be met in the Union.

a) They thought the Union should have won the battle

Explanation:

  • Eleven states broke from the Union before the civil war had started. Till the battle of Sumter on 12 April 1861 was not over four states (Arkansas, Virginia, Tennessee, and North Carolina,) did not secede
  • Many states left because, when the war began, they were concerned about what would happen to slavery. They had waited till the Civil war had begun prior to quitting the Union. Afterthe battle at Fort Sumter these states were convinced their interests in the Union would never be met
  • Many feared that after the civil war ended, slavery would come to an end. They became worried with the southern way of life, if slavery stopped. They realized that the only way to defend slavery and the southern way of life was to join the Confederacy
