Akbar denied to reward the old priest (brahman) because he thought that he had cheated by keeping himself warm throughout the night by the heat given out by the diya at the other side of the river. Birbal couldn't stand the injustice, therefore he played a trick to make the emperor understand his folly and that he is guilty.
