Akbar’s relations with the Rajputs have to be seen against the wider background of Mughal policy towards the powerful rajas and zamindars of the country.

When Hymayun came back to India, he embarked upon a deliberate policy of trying to win over these elements. Abul Fazl says that in order “to soothe the minds of the zamindars, he entered in to matrimonial relations with them”.

Akbar wanted to befriend the rajputs because he realized that to establish an empire in India ,it was imperative to befriend the Rajputs. Also , he was impressed by their loyalty and bravery.

The following are the steps he took to achieve this -:

- he welcomed matrimonial alliance in which he and his soldiers married Hindu ladies sothat their Kingdom does not attack theirs.

- Akbar also gave high ranks , titles and properties to the members of his raj put family .

- He did not force hid Rajput wives to convert to Islam.

- Rajput customs were observed in Akbar's court .

- hence , the Rajputa became loyal supporters and contributed towards strengthening and expanding the Akbar''s empire.
