why did Alexander give the soldier who saved the hat band a reward?

Alexander gave the soldier a reward due to the fact of his bravery and loyalty towards Alexander the Great. He ordered for his head to be chopped off because the soldier put the hat band on his own head and that is some sort of disrespect.
