Ali gave guinees to clerk because now Ali was not capable to go to post office daily and his end was near so Ali gave him guinees so that after clerk would give him the Letter of his daughter...

Ali knew his end was near. He had no strength left anymore to
come to the post office again. As he was returning from the post office
empty-handed yet another time without receiving any letter from Miriam, with
tears in his eyes, he heard a clerk, Laxmi Das coming behind him. He called him
and requested him to do a favour. He gave him his five guineas, the savings of
his life-time and requested him to put his letter on his grave if ever any
latter from Miriam ever arrived at the post office.
