There's probably two reasons :

To End the war : America was directly fighting Japan in the WW ii, the war has done a great damage to both sides, loss of lives was countless. The pacific ocean became the battlefield between two countries. Even Japan knew they are losing the war but they haven't stopped fighting, Japan was near to its End. Then America decided to take a most crucial & hard step to bomb Japan with a Nuclear weapon. On 6 August 1945, America dropped a Uranium based Nuclear bomb named Little Boy on Hiroshima killing nearly 150,000 people in Hiroshima and three days later on 9 August they bombed Nagasaki with a Ploutnim based Nuclear bomb named Fat Man & killing nearly one lakh people. After two back to back nuclear attacks Japan became very weak & nothing left for them. Then they surrendered & the war Ended. To test a Nuclear bomb on Humans : nuclear bomb was never tested on Human beings before, so knowingly America dropped two different type of nuclear bombs on two different places to check the impact & power of the bomb, how much area it effects, how many human can it kill, what kind of effect it will leave etc. The Uranium based Little Boy rocked Hiroshima & Ploutnim implosion based Fatman ashed Nagasaki.
