After Tet and the growing unpopularity of the war the US were looking to withdraw. They were looking for 'Peace with Honor'. After 1968 President Nixon introduced a policy of 'Vietnamisation' – replacing US troops with South Vietnamese soldiers but this failed to hold back the Vietcong.

US withdrew from the war due to the foll. reasons-

• Citizens of US were critical of the government for entering a war that they saw as indefensible.

• Youth (except university graduates) were forced to serve in the armed forces. This spread anger among the youth especially the poor.

•US media  and films played also played a role by criticising the war. Eg- Jonh Ford Cappola's Apocalypse Now

• US underestimated the nationalism to move ppl to action, inspire them to sacrifice their life and home, live under horrific conditions and fight for independence.  They underestimated the power of a small country to fight the most technologically advanced country in the world.
