The American's wanted to settle in Texas for free land and also because they wanted America to expand and take over territories that belonged to Mexico.

Explanation:

The people from the southern states wanted to expand westward. The planting of cotton was very profitable using slave labor and the cotton gin. The settlers wanted more land. Starting in Georgia the cotton agriculture had spread to Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana

America had no more land to the west but Mexico did.

Mexico offered free land to American settlers who would come to Texas and homestead in areas threatened by Indian attacks. The Americans came homesteaded and fought the Indians.

Mexico required that the Americans obey Mexican laws regarding slavery. The southern settlers now called Texans refused to obey Mexican laws, and declared themselves independent from Mexico.
