Why did ancient Rome begin to trade more with other regions?

A population this large required more than what the empire could provide, so they looked at countries around them to see what kind of goods they specialized in. Also, the leaders of Rome wanted to keep its citizens happy, so the Romans began searching for goods that weren't necessary, but luxuries, such as silk.
