In the chapter ‘The Thief’s Story’ Anil employs Hari as a cook even though he could not afford to pay him because Hari offered him a deal which was that Hari would cook for him without money if only Anil would feed him too.

Anil was not a rich man and he needed someone to look after the house, thus he agreed to employ Hari as a cook if he would prepare meals for the both of them.
