Anne Frank received the diary as a gift from her father, Otto Frank, on her thirteenth birthday. Anne did want to give a brief in the diary at first because she considered it to be her real friend. Moreover, she didn't want to be formal with her friend, the diary. She used to call her diary Kitty and did not address it as 'Dear Diary'. Earlier entries were a bit informal and difficult to understand as no clear information about the characters was given. Later entries reveal the growth of Anne as a writer. She even considered publishing it, so he often edited it. Her father got the diary published after her death, it was originally published as 'The Annex'. Later, the book was named 'The Diary of a Young Girl'.
