Why did Ashoka give up the kalinga war after winning ?

when Ashoka was the king of the Mauryan empire....... Kalinga was not the part of this empire. so, he decided that he should conquer Kalinga. he fought and won. but after this war Ashoka felt depressed and so much remorse. Thus, he decided that he would not fight anymore and gave up.
