The attitude of the colonial government changed after the revolt of 1857 as they feared that the press could cause another revolt as it was widely read by people and rebellious thoughts might instigate people to revolt against the government. Hence the British decided to clamp down on the press.


For this purpose , they introduced the Press laws , modeled on the Irish Press laws. It gave the government power to review the articles written in newspapers. If an article was judged as seditious , the Press was given a warning. If the warning was ignored , the press was liable to be stopped and the printing machinery confiscated.
