We all have grown up listening to the stories of Akbar and Birbal. However, let’s go a few generations back and talk about Akbar’s grandfather Babur, the first Mughal emperor and his association with Tenali Ram, a great jester and a witty man.

Tenali Raman was essentially a jester in the court of King Krishnadevaraya, who ruled Vijayanagara kingdom in South India. Tenali was known for his quick wit and intelligence and was once invited by Babur in his court --- however, Babur had already ordered his courtiers to not laugh at Tenali Ram’s jokes, in a bid to demotivate the jester.

After multiple failed attempts, Tenali was about to give up on the attempt of entertaining the Mughal emperor when he thought of an idea -- he once disguised himself as an old man and planted some seeds into the soil while Babur was passing by. Seeing him, Babur quipped, “Why are planting this seeds when you won’t be around to enjoy its fruits?”

Tenali replied, “Oh great King, these fruits will be enjoyed by my grandchildren, I am doing this for them”. Impressed by the old man’s answer, Babur awarded him 100 gold coins.

Tenali Ram then continued – “And this is how I have earned the fruits of my labour (coins) even without having the fruit.”

The King laughed and when Tenali Ram disclosed his true identity, he accepted him whole heartedly…
