When she was a few months old, Bholi had fallen off the cot on her head which probably resulted in brain damage making her a backward child. Also with the pockmarks scarring her face people did not want to associate themselves with a person who looked ugly and lacked sense. For as long as she could remember, Bholi had been treated with disdain and unconcern by her very parents which resulted in her low morale and fearful and agitated behaviour. Consequently Bholi would feel terrified at being spoken to or speaking to an unfamiliar person.
