Facing controversy over legislation governing the rights of sexual minority students, an “unhappy” Premier Jim Prentice hit the pause button on Bill 10 Thursday to send the Progressive Conservative government back to the legislative drawing board.
Prentice’s decision followed a heated debate in the Alberta Legislature on Wednesday when the PCs proposed to amend Bill 10, The Act to Amend the Alberta Bill of Rights to Protect our Children, to no longer require students to appeal to federal court if their school board does not support a gay-straight alliance (GSA) club and for Education Minister Gordon Dirks to establish GSAs in areas where students want the anti-bullying groups but the school boards do not want them.
