Bill befooled the lawyer because he found the lawyer quite gentle, inexperienced and gullible in the first meeting at New Mullion station. Bill could easily recognize the man as a lawyer. The man came to the village wearing the lawyer dress. Actually, Bill was knowing that he had many cases in the court, to avoid himself from appearing in the court, he introduced himself as a hack driver in New Mullion and attempted to deceive the lawyer. He cheated the lawyer to earn money and to show his villagers how he takes the lawyer from one place to another.
