A scientist named Charles Barkla did an experiment by passing X rays from the some sort of substance. He observed 2 different X rays reflected back with different energies. He thought there must be energies of rays with lower and higher intensity both. So the started naming them from between of alphabets. These were dependent on the electrons energy level. SO, they named the energy level according to reflecting type of X rays
Hope this helps you.
