Both of them claim their ownership over the Meadows. Lomov says that Oxen Meadows was given to Chubukov's peasants for free use. They were to make bricks for the Lomovs.

Lomov and Chubukov's daughter Natalya were busy in conversation and then Lomov said that the Oxen Meadows touched Natalya's birchwood. Then Natalya immediately said that the Oxen Meadows were theirs. This was the root cause for the clash between the Lomov and Chubukov that day. Both the families wanted the ownership of the Oxen Meadows because it was very pricely place. Anyway land costs a lot and here it was meadows which even would have cost higher than land.
