Indigo is blue color dye which is used to dye cloth. There was a great demad of it in Britain. The Industrial revolution increased the demand further. Since there climate was not suitable for growing indigo , the British have to get indigo from West Indies and America . But the collapse of indigo plantation in West Indies forced the British to look for source from other places . To meet it increasing demand the British turned to India because the climate here was suitable to growing indigo.

Britain needed Indigo to dye clothes from the early 19 century the company began to Four Seasons in Bengal to grow Indigo on their fields this was because of two reasons.

  • The industrial revolution has started in England and she needed a regular supply of Indigo dye the enormous quantities of clothes .
  • England imported Indigo from West Indies and North America Indigo plantations in the reason collapse in the late 18th century show the company turn to India to meet this needs.
