The British East India Company was originally started in 1600 to set up trading with India and establish relationship with Indian rulers. India was rich in spices, cotton, tea, indigo, saltpetre etc., which Britain wanted to trade in.

Following a rebellion in 1857, the British government took over control of the British East India Company and started ruling over India.

Following the initial years, the Indians realised that the British were taking away produce from India, but the returns were poor. The British also started mistreating Indians, which lead to rebellions and unrest. At this stage the British found that they were not getting the cooperation of Indians and had to resort to harsh measures, to enhance their income.
