Why did carter cut the mummy of king tut ?

Howard Carter had to cut the mummy of King Tut because it had stuck to the bottom of the gold coffin and no amount of heat would melt it. All other methods also failed. So the only means to detach  it from the coffin was to cut it out carefully.
