Why did Chandu menon give up the idea of translation of english novels in Malayalam
Answers
Chandu Menon had started translating an English novel 'Henrietta Temple' written by Benjamin Disraeli into Malayalam. But he stopped the translation because he felt that the Malayali people will not be able to relate to the characters of the novel, their sense of dressing, manners and way of speaking. They will not understand a direct translation of the novel.
So he started writing a novel named 'Indulekha' in Malayalam in the 'manner of English novels'.
Chandu Menon gave up the idea of translation of English novels in Malayalam. Initially he made an effort to translate in English.
However soon he realised that Kerala readers are not much familiar with the characters in the English novels, their way of speaking, mannerism or clothes.
So they started finding it terribly boring. Hence he gave up English and began writing it in Malayalam.
