why did charles dickens focus on the life of the industrial workers ?

Charles Dickens in his novel "Hard Times" ( 1984) focussed on the life of industrial workers and terrible conditions of urban life.He depicts an industrial town as a dull place which is surrounded by machinery, smoking chimneys, polluted rivers and uniform buildings.He criticised the greed of the people for earning more profits which had made them mechanical and instruments of production.The workers had no other identity except to be known as machines or operators
