The Chief of Seattle was a public leader. Seattle in America was named after him.

In a famous speech he criticized the white people for their imperialistic attitude. Furthermore he questioned their  reckless way of living that led to developments affecting the natural environment.

He blamed his own for losing ancestral land as the speech given by him was a response to the American Government’s land treaty to buy the native lands proposed by Issac Stevens, the Governor of Washington Territory.

He blamed his own because he questioned how the government had no regard for the need of the natives’ friendship in return of their goodwill. There were very few people left in his tribe. He blamed the Whites of forcing their way into native lands of the Red Indians. The youth of his own people were not responsible and sensible which is why they ended up losing their ancestral lands.
