The reason is that many people were tired of Roman state rituals that seemed empty and were attracted to the idea of social eqality, justice, and the promise of an afterlife that christianity offered.
And this led to the spread of christanity in the north and west of the Europe, carried by Merchants, Missionaries and Soldiers.
