This organization, founded in 1864, was dedicated to providing medical aid and other assistance to people wounded in wartime. In 1870 a war broke out between Germany and France. This war, known as the Franco-Prussian War (1870–71), gave Barton an opportunity to see how the International Red Cross operated.
