The domains of the magnetised object ..here compass needle get alligned in parellel or anti parallel to the magnetic field of the magnet ...which is greater than the magnetic field of earth for short distances ...

Hi
A compas uses the magnetic force of the poles of the earth to point in North-South direction.
A magnet also create a magnetic field around it. When it is brought near a compass , the magnetic needle of the compass gets deflected. The deflection can be of two cases :
case1) The south pole of the magnatised compass needle gets attracted towards the north pole of the magnet or vice versa.
case2) The like poles deflect each other.
