.Because the british believed the rule of law in the highest regard since they thought of thenselves as a much more civilized nation. They could not find any way through which they could take the dominion of the nawab of awad and hence looked for a legal pretext to annex it. The mal governance of the nawab was the pretext given before the annexation took place.
