Dalhousie used the excuse of misgovernance to annex Awadh because the British wanted to portray themselves as functioning under the rule of law. Further, they wanted to portray the image that they were bringing good governance and civilization to India.

.Because the british believed the rule of law in the highest regard since they thought of thenselves as a much more civilized nation. They could not find any way through which they could take the dominion of the nawab of awad and hence looked for a legal pretext to annex it. The mal governance of the nawab was the pretext given before the annexation took place.
