Dr Mortimer needed the services of Sherlock Holmes as he was expert in solving crimes. He briefed Holmes and his assistant Dr Watson about the  mysterious death's of the decedents of the famous Sir Hugo Baskerville who killed the innocent girl on the moor then after was killed by the Hound.

Dr Mortimer in order to avert further tragedy and protect  Sir Henry Baskerville, from the fate which his past descendents had to face  engaged  the services of Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson.

Holmes and Watson's main objective is to protect Sir Henry Baskerville from the hound which haunts his family.

In the story "The Hound of the Baskervilles" of the Sherlock Holmes stories by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Dr. Mortimer needed the service of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson to investigate the death of Sir Charles Baskerville. Sir Charles Baskerville had suddenly died and it was said that he was afraid of a dog known as the Hound of Hell. He was left by his nephew Henry Baskerville. Holmes also tried to protect the life of Henry Baskerville from the murderer of Sir Charles Baskerville.
