Why did drona ask for ekalavya right thums as guru

Cause drona saw that ekalavya was a great at archery and may become an extremely great at archery if taught properly and was already doing well that too without other’s support. But the problem was that drona already promised arjun that he will any how make him(arjun) the greatest archer in the whole world and now he cannot break that promise to him so guru drona asked eekalavya to give his thumb as guru dakshina to drona just to keep the promise to arjun .
