Why did early buddhists believe Buddha could not be painted?

Buddhists do not accept the concept of an eternal Self while Hindus do. Some people say that Buddhists reject the caste system. Buddha himself proudly identified himself as Kshatriya. Buddha agreed with the Hindu scriptural position that terms like Brahmana, Kshatriya are based on conduct and not on last name.

Well, the Buddha was the founder of Buddhism. The Buddha, himself, actually did not want any statutes of him made and forbade it during his lifetime.
