During Wellesley’s regime, Wellesley introduced the subsidiary alliance system in India.
The alliance was between the native Indian rulers and the East India company.
According to this alliance, the company would protect the native state from any French or outside invasion.
In return the native ruler would have to pay a subsidy to the East India Company.
But some of the native rulers were against this alliance and as such there were revolts against the company.
To bring the situation under control, Wellesley had to take help of the military which resulted in the increase in military expenditure. This was the reason why the East India Company during Wellesley’s regime incur financial burden.
