Emperor Aurangzeb Ban the playing of pungi because it became the name of reeded noise-makers. It was improved by USTAD BISMILLAH KHAN. He has made a new instrument and when he played this before the king, the king was very impressed with the sound. After that the instrument named was shehnai because it was played before the shah(emperor) and it was played by a nai(barber) so, it was named as SHEHNAI.

After some time a barber modified pungi into a veena which has a pleasant sound.
