Why did England believe the colonists had to be responsible British citizens when they were an ocean apart?

The British had sponsored their journey so they owed them loyalty.
Parliament had trouble in the past and did not want it repeated.
Colonists were needed to fight in European wars and must be obedient.
Britain required loyalty in order to maintain authority.
