Why did european power meet at berlin in1885

The partition of Africa began with theBerlin Conference from 1884-1885which was held in Berlin. On this meeting, all the significant Europeanstates were welcomed, including; Germany, Spain, Netherland, Belgium, Portugal, France and Great Britain. There was no African invited to this gathering.
