Answer:

Explanation:
An old priest, named Peter Gilligan, was very tired and sad, because most of his flock (the people of his parish) was sick (in their beds) or had died (under green sods lay). One evening, when he is just drifting off to sleep, he is summoned to see another poor man, and Father Gilligan cries out “I have no rest, nor joy, nor peace” At once, he realises his mistake and cries, “God firgive! My body spake, not I,” meaning that it was due to his bodily exhaustion, and not because he did not wish to serve his people, that he had complained. He knelt in prayer, and fell asleep without answering the poor sick man’s call. The evening faded away, stars appeared and grew into millions, leaves shook in the wind, and as the night fell, god whispered to mankind (breeze).
The next morning, Father Gilligan wakes with a start. He realises that the man must have died while he slept and cries out in distress “Mavrone*, mavrone!” Waking his horse, he rides recklessly over rocky lanes, and wet marshlands. When he reaches the poor man’s house, the poor man’s wife opens the door and asks him why he has come again. Father Gilligan asks if the man had died, and when he hears that he had, sways back and forth with grief, and disappointment that he had failed at his task. The lady then tells him, that when he had left, her husband had died, peacefully and happily. At these words, Father Gilligan kneels and begins to pray. Father Gilligan knew that he was not the one who had attended to the dying man, so he realised that God had sent an angel down to take his place in fulfilling the poor man’s wish, and letting the old priest rest. Peter Gilligan is amazed that God, who had to take care of the entire universe, had taken pity on him, as he felt he was insignificant (humble)
Answer:
The sick man's wife was surprised to see Father Gilligan because she thought he had come earlier and given the last sacraments to her dying husband. In fact it was an angel that came earlier and not Father Gilligan
